How soon after a tooth extraction can I have a dental implant?

A tooth extraction is the process which precedes the dental implant. It is not necessary in every case, but when it is, the waiting for the implant may depend on each patient’s situation.

After the surgery, your dentist will make a 3D Scan of your mouth. There are three possible scenarios:

First Case

In the first scenario, the extraction has enough bone to support the implant and offer a strong base. If this is the case, the implant could be put in instantly.

The advantages are that there are less interventions and the procedure, just like the cicatrization time, are highly reduced. Also, the implant can use the extracted tooth space and make all the surgery easier for both, patient and doctor.

The following step is healing, which can be from 3 to 6 months long.

If there is an infection, or any preexisting oral issue, the dentist won’t be able to proceed with the implants.

Second Case

Another scenario is when the jawbone must heal after the surgery before the implant is placed. This would occur from 2 to 3 months after the extraction. During this time is when the resorption of the bone happens, so that the mouth is better prepared to support the titanium screws, which will be placed from 3 to 6 months after the extraction.

Third Case

The last and most complicated scenario is when the space left in the bone is wider than the metallic post. In this situation, the dentist won’t have more options than carrying on a bone grafting in the jawbone. This will mean a longer waiting time for the patient to receive the implant. This is due to the fact that the healing process takes from 3 to 6 months.

You should add to this period of time, the 3 to 6 months you need to wait so that the osseointegration can occur.

Conclusion

As you can see, there is not one generic answer to this question. That is the reason why you shouldn’t keep losing time and better schedule a consultation with your nearest Esteem doctor, and hopefully you will receive your implants right after the extraction. And in case you don’t, your carefully crafted implants will be waiting for you.
